The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently issued a warning about a certain Chinese baby formula which is illegal in the country. The milk-based formula might be responsible for the death of an infant and also caused kidney stones in dozens of others.
Even though its sale is prohibited, the formula managed to find a route on to the U.S. market. According to FDA’s officials, it is tainted with the industrial chemical melamine, the contaminant found in pet food ingredients made in China and linked to the troubling deaths and illnesses of hundreds of cats and dogs in 2007. The chemical artificially makes the milk appear to have significantly more protein, leading to the above mentioned reactions.
Janice Oliver, deputy director for operations for the agency’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, explained that their efforts are focused on getting this message across in the Chinese community, as the other legally sold formula poses no sort of threat of contamination.
"We have some concerns that there may be some supplies of infant formula that may have gotten into the country illegally and may be in specialty markets that serve the Chinese community," said Janice Oliver.
The general public must be aware that all products found on the market must receive FDA’s approval, which can only happen with the reach of certain high standards. All retailers must provide strictly allowed products and all consumers must check the info found on the labels.
