A Chinese worker posed smiling, making peace signs with an
iPhone while working at the assembly line at Foxconn's Shenzhen plant and the
photo accidentally made it to the default pictures of a handset.
A British man named Mark purchased that iPhone last week
and, after seeing the picture, posted it on MacRumors.com under the user named
"markm49uk" from Kingston-upon-Hull.
Then the picture, which was meant to test the phone’s camera but was never deleted,
exploded on the blogosphere. Most blogers were concerned that the smiling
Chinese woman would get fired for the mistake, while others joked and said they
will return their iPhone because it lacked the picture.
However, the young female worker was not fired and a
spokesman for the Chinese plant described the episode as "a beautiful mistake." The incident
might turn out to be a good shift of image for the Foxconn Shenzhen
plant which in 2006 was the subject of many newspaper articles because its workers
were allegedly being paid just £27 a month, were living in dormitories build on
the site and were sleeping 100 in a room. Their only possessions when they were
being hired were a bucked in which they would then wash their clothes.
Back to the Chinese lady who is working in that factory; she
became very popular after her photo made it on the blogoshpere and was
nicknamed “iPhone Girl.”
But the story isn’t all smiles. The young worker is
reportedly quite displeased with the situation and the supposed paparazzi
stalking.
“She told me she wanted to quit her job and go back home to
get away from this. We let her off work today so she could rest,” Liu Kun, the
factory spokesperson told the South China Morning Post.
“She has requested us not to make her name public and we
will respect her decision,” Kun the China Daily.
