Beijing - China took its gold medal haul to 40 on Tuesday at the Beijing Olympics while USA picked up two golds and saw its women sprinters set about taking revenge on Jamaica in the 200 metres heats.

There was also injury heartbreak for Indian long jump hope Anju Bobby George a third sailing gold for Britain and German success in the men's triathlon.

Li Xiaopeng won the men's parallel bars to take China a step closer to its aim of topping Sunday's final medal table. It now has eight more than in Athens 2004.

Anna Tunnicliffe won sailing gold in the Laser category and Henry Cejudo was a shock freestyle wrestling winner in the 55kg class.

On the track the US women's team, beaten comprehensively in the 100m by a Jamaican medal clean sweep, dominated the 200m heats.

Muna Lee was the fastest running 22.71 seconds and world champion Allyson Felix also progressed by winning her heat in 23.02 seconds.

Jamaica still boasts the top three times of the year from 100m world champion Veronica Campbell (21.94), and joint 100m Olympic silver medallists Kerron Stewart (21.99) and Sherone Simpson (22.11). All three also went through into the second round.

The US also dominated long jump qualifying with Brittney Reese leaping 6.87m and world and Olympic champion Tatyana Lebedeva also jumping into the final with 6.70m.

The same distance was scored by Swedish star Carolina Kluft, who has "no regrets" about giving up the heptathlon which she dominated 2002-2007.

"I was tired physically and mentally. So I made a decision," Kluft told Deutsche Presse Agentur dpa. Kluft said she didn't even really watch the Olympic heptathlon as she saw the long jump as "a new challenge".

The biggest heartbreak of the morning came for the 2003 world championship bronze medallist Bobby George as she managed no measured jump after a freak injury in her right foot.

In the first medal decided of the day Jan Frodeno of Germany took Olympic gold in the men's triathlon sprinting to victory on the final stretch.

Four runners were together in the closing stages of the race but Frodeno powered to victory in the final 300 metres to win in a time of 1 hour 48 minutes 53 seconds.

Simon Whitfield of Canada took silver with bronze going to New Zealand's Bevan Docherty. World champion and race favourite Javier Gomez of Spain trailed in fourth.

Paul Goodison then claimed Olympic sailing gold for Britain in the men's Laser category, winning with a total of 63 points after the 10 races.

Slovenia's Vasilij Zbogar with 71 points was second while Diego Romero of Italy claimed bronze with 75 points.

Goodison's win gave Britain its third sailing gold at Qingdao following the success of Ben Ainslie in the men's individual Finn and Sarah Ayton's crew won in the yngling category.

After Cejudo's surprise men's Wrestling Freestyle victory in the 55kg class, Russian Mavlet Batirov won the 60kg class.

Back in the Bird's Next Tuesday evening's medal events are the men's 1,500m, high jump, discus throw and the women's 400m and 100m hurdles final.
