Sharon Stone is still being chastised for her unfortunate
comments made in Cannes
last month. Organizers of the Shanghai International Film Festival said the
American actress was not welcome at this year’s edition.
Sharon Stone is still a public enemy in China following her red carpet moment at the
Cannes Film Festival, when she suggested that the disastrous May 12 earthquake in
China was possibly a result
of “karma,” due to the country’s relationship with Tibet and the Dalai Lama.
Stone also called the Dalai Lama, whom China considers
a traitor, a “good friend.”
Chinese media reports said the Shanghai International Film
Festival would forever ban Stone from attending its events, reports Reuters,
but an official from the organizing committee has only said, diplomatically,
that “she is not among the list of guests to be invited,” per the China Daily.
The backlash over the 50-year-old actress’s words has been expansive.
French fashion house Christian Dior promptly cancelled its collaboration with
Stone for Chinese ads. The Hollywood Reporter informed that one of China’s
biggest cinema chains stated it would not show her films in its theaters.
Ng See-Yuen, founder of the UME Cineplex chain and chairman
of the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, labeled Stone’s remarks as very “inappropriate.”
Stone attended the Shanghai International Film Festival last
year.
Following the public outrage, she apologized to Chinese
citizens, saying in a statement issued by Dior China that her “erroneous words and
deeds angered and saddened the Chinese people, and I sincerely apologize for
this.”
She went on to promise she would participate in earthquake
relief activity, “to do my utmost to help Chinese people affected by the
disaster.”
More than 69,000 people died in the May 12 earthquake. Millions
of people were left without homes.
