China continues its fight against online vulgarity, as officials confirmed shutting down 1250 websites containing pornography, and arresting 41 persons in connection with them.
Liu Zhengrong, deputy director of the State Council Information Office’s Internet Bureau,
told reporters:
We fully realize that the crackdown on vulgar websites will be long-lasting, complicated and difficult. We will not abandon efforts to clean up the Internet environment under any circumstances.
Furthermore, Liu stressed the purpose of this campaign as being a very clear one, aimed at creating a healthy environment for all young people and making the Internet in China safer and more reliable.
The crackdown on porn websites is not something new for China, whose online population has officially broken down all records and terms of size and growth rate.
In 2007, the Public Security Ministry in China shut down 44,000 porn websites and arrested 868 people. In addition to that, 2,000 people were penalized since the Chinese government began its anti-porn campaign in 2007.
One particular case was a porn site based in Taiwan that offered life strip show or sex acts filmed in different locations in China. 33 people were arrested for selling real-time porn. The site easily became one of the most visited pornographic sites, but its regular users were in for an unpleasant surprise when authorities shut it downin 2007.
China has one of the most restrictive internet policies in the world, and a monitoring police is permanently on stand-by, ready to take action whenever necessary.
