The third installment of the
already famous movie “Rush Hour” has been waited for with much interest by many
people, but China
seems to be once again in total discordance with the whole world. “Rush Hour 3”,
the latest comedy featuring the famous Chinese actor Jackie Chan, has been
banned in China.
The news has followed previous
speculations that the comedy features politically contentious. So, despite the
fact that Hong Kong-born actor Jackie Chan is a national hero in China, his
country decided to ban his latest movie.
Although the Chinese authorities
have been reportedly angered by the movie’s story association with the Triad
gang members, China Film Group’s import and export arm Xiao Ping has officially
stated that the comedy is banned because they “think it will not be popular in China.”
This idea seems to be quite strange, if one takes into account that the
previous two installments of the famous franchise were box office hits.
However, the state-run Film Bureau has also insisted that the decision of
banning “Rush Hour 3” has been taken for commercial, not political, reasons.
China’s strict rules permit only 20
foreign movies releases per year, but this does not spare the accepted movies
from being severely censored first. This was the case of Chow Yun-fat’s pirate
character from “Pirates of the Caribbean:
At World's End”, which was censored earlier this year.
“Rush Hour 3” features the same
two main actors, Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, who will now find themselves in Paris, fighting against a
Chinese mafia gang. The movie is expected to be hit at the box office.
