Chimp Attack Victim Is Still Struggling For Her Life

The Connecticut woman who was mauled last month by a chimpanzee remains in critical condition at the Cleveland Clinic, and her potential for recovery remains unclear, the facility said Wednesday. Charla Nash lost her hands, nose, lips and eyelids in the Feb. 16 attack, the Cleveland Clinic said Wednesday.

She may be blind and brain damaged, and her injuries are so severe hospital officials say it's still unclear if she can recover at all.

Nash's vision is threatened, and "critical issues still remain related to a significant traumatic brain injury", according to the statement.

Nevertheless the Cleveland clinic is credited with conducting the first successful face transplant surgery. But in this case, they say any consideration of that option is premature. Nash’s injuries were so horrific that even the doctors and nurses and technicians who battled to save her life were shocked.

Two weeks ago, 55-year old Charla Nash was asked by her neighbor, Sandra Herold, to come to her house to lure the chimp back home. When she did, Nash was brutally attacked by the 200-pound chimp, mauling her and causing serious injuries to her. Herold stabbed the chimp with a kitchen knife, but he would not leave off the attack. Herold was hysterical by the time she called 911, telling a dispatcher her chimp was tearing her friend’s face off and begging police to come with guns to shoot and kill the pet she had raised from infancy. The woman had to be rushed to the hospital where she has been in critical condition for weeks.
