The large majority of Americans get their health insurance from their work place, those who are jobless are thus in a big predicament. About 46 million people have no health insurance and the rest are covered by government insurance.
The universal health-care systems, proposed by president elect Barack Obama, may be the last hope for many people living without medical insurance and in poverty. People who have very low incomes cannot afford the hundreds of dollars needed in order afford health insurance, and so they live without any, hoping not to get sick.
Recently a plan supporting health care for needy children has received support from Senate. The resolution supports efforts in Congress to allocate up to $31 billion more to expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program over a 4-1/2-year period.
The SCHIP program was initially vetoed by President George W. Bush, on the basis that it would set the scene for socialized medicine. If the resolution manages to pass Senate it will most certainly be approved by president elect Barack Obama, who is very keen on reforming the whole health care system.
On the other hand, Republicans are against the measure, claiming that it creates a disincentive for employers to cover employees’ children in private health plans.
Health insurance has a become a big issue as more and more people are laid off due to the financial crisis, their options being either seeking new individual health insurance. Seeking a health care for children in a needy family has become even more difficult.
