Chihuahua - Still On Top! |

The summer of 2008 was pretty slow at the box office. Critics have said the absence of viewers is due to the poor quality of the movies that premiered in the summer. Others blame the economy, especially the high price of gas for people choosing to watch a movie at home rather than drive to even the nearest theater.
Autumn, however, was a breath of fresh air. It might have been exactly what the American movie industry needed in order to get back on its feet and hopefully start producing better, more interesting and captivating movies. Last weekend, the hit movie at the box office was “Beverly Hills Chihuahua”. The canine comedy rapidly gained the top spot in the “most viewed movie” hierarchy, and applying a bit of high school psychology might explain why.
The movie follows the adventures of a rich, mollycoddled Chihuahua dog that is taken from its extravagant life to live with its Mexican kith and kin. Apparently, the public enjoys seeing poverty being made fun of, as one way to get over a tough situation is simply laughing about it.
And given the precarious state of the American economy, this movie has got to be hilarious, as it made it again to the top of the box office, for the second weekend in a row!
The hit movie, centered on the adventures of a spoilt Chihuahua, beat “Body of Lies” – a much advertised movie with a potentially interesting topic, namely espionage during the Iraq war, but also a movie following the life of the first African-American football player who won the Heisman Trophy – “The Express”. By the look of things, it would take a silver-screen masterpiece to knock “Chihuahua” down off its box office saddle.
