Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong have reunited two decades after
parting ways, since neither of them is “getting any younger” and plan to tour
once again.
Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, who are now 62 and 70-year-old
respectively, have reunited after a 20-year hiatus. In 1987, they split due to
creative differences.
By that time, the duo had earned a Grammy Award for best
comedy album, back in 1973. The two comedians starred in eight comedy films,
portraying to perfection the drug-addled hippies. Their act was much based on
the free love and drug culture movement of the hippie era.
They found success in the 1970s and 1980s. Their previous
attempts at a reunion were futile, because they would soon end up fighting.
Cheech Marin revealed to AP Radio earlier this month that it
takes “about three minutes” for them to start fighting but that this time
around, they “kind of resolved” what he called “this veiled hatred.”
Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong got together again and
concluded that neither was getting any younger and that there was still fun to
be had. The duo told reporters Wednesday at a news conference at the Troubadour
that the upcoming tour is going to be “very theatrical.”
The Troubadour was no chance selection of a locale, as the Los Angeles nightclub is
closely tied to their success: it was here that they were discovered in the 1970s
performing their stand-up routine.
Their “Light Up America” tour will kick off Sept. 12 in Philadelphia.
Their solo careers have not been barren, with Cheech Marin lending
his voice to characters in a number of animated films, including “Cars” and “The
Lion King.”
Tommy Chong recently found a fanbase playing drug-addled
hippie Leo in “That 70s Show.”
