There is a constant desire to make motorways safer, and as cars get more and more horse power and get faster and faster, distractions are not a good thing to go in this equation.
The National Safety Council is calling for a total nationwide driver ban on the use of cell phones, including hands-free devices was demonstrated scientifically that driving while talking on the phone, even if using a hands free device, is not safe at all. Some studies even state that driving while talking on the phone is the same as driving under the influence of alcoholic drinks.
Researchers proved that using a hands free device, like a Bluetooth headset, is as distracting as holding the phone to your ear, and takes away most of the driver’s concentration.
This is mainly because while talking on the phone one must concentrate a lot more on the context of the conversation than when talking to somebody face to face, where the body language is also available.
Some states have enacted legislation controlling the use of cell phones but permitting the use of hands-free devices.
Nearly 20 states have enacted legislation that restricts use of cell phones by novice drivers. Clearly, more measures are needed o be taken, as talking on your mobile is, obviously, a big distraction that keeps your mind away from the road.
The NSC is currently in full campaign and is urging on states to pass more legislation banning the use of cell phones while driving.
