Many churches in Oxford decided to make a conference as to celebrate the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin, an English naturalist whose theory explained the fact that all the species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors through natural selection.
“On the Origin of Species” is Darwin’s most important study published on the theory of evolution and the event hosted by Oxford’s churches will also celebrate 150 years since the book had been published. Tim Stead, the reverend who organizes the event, stated that he wanted to find out more about the relationship between religion and science.
The reverend added that the theory of evolution has been one of the most important scientific ideas ever explored and this conference’s goal is to explore more of Darwin’s contribution to the way we see the world. "It impacts on our entire understanding of the world,” the reverend added.
Darwin’s theory on the way that evolution occurs was accepted by the scientific community in the years he was still alive, but his theory of natural selection was seen as the main explanation of the process of evolution in 1930. Now, this second theory of Darwin is the basis of the modern evolutionary theory.
The scientific discoveries that Darwin created are now representing the foundation of biology and offer a great amount of understanding when it comes to explain the diversity of life. His 1859 book, “On the Origin of Species” established the evolutionary descent and the diversification in nature. Darwin examined the human evolution and the sexual selection in many books, as well as the evolution of the earthworms and their life in the soil.
