Authorities have identified the man behind the ape and slaying of a 6-year-old southwest Florida girl back in 2006. DNA evidence at the crime scene has matched that of Patrick Dewayne Murphy, 27, whose DNA was entered in the statewide database following other run-ins with the law.
In January, he was sentenced to two years in state prison for burglary and vehicle theft, and Florida policy is to gather DNA information on all felons. Last month, checks revealed that his genetic blueprint matched that recovered from the dead body of 6-year-old Coralrose Fullwood, leading to the first break in a two-year-old investigation.
The investigation consisted so far of interviews of more than 1,000 people, but apparently little progress was made until the apprehension of Patrick Dewayne Murphy. In the course of the investigation, it was found that Coralrose’s father, Dale Fullwood, had child pornography in his home computer, a felony. He currently serves in the Jackson Correctional Institution after pleading no contest last year to the charges brought against him.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement apparently believes that there might be other people involved in the actual crime or who knew about the murder. This is currently the focus of the investigation.
Patrick Dewayne Murphy, born and raised in Kentucky, is charged with first degree murder, sexual battery on a child and kidnapping. He apparently moved three years ago with his parents to North Port, Florida, and worked as a carpenter and later as a roofer.
