DreamWorks Broadway musical, Shrek The Musical, is getting closer to its opening day, but not without the typical obstacles that always occur before a premiere. Therefore the show will feature a new Donkey, impersonated by Tony Award nominee Daniel Breaker. The actor was nominated in the Best Featured Actor in a Musical ategory, for Passing Strange.
Donkey’s character was initially to be played by Chester Gregory during the Seattle run of the musical. Moreover, Kecia Lewis-Evans will not come to Broadway in the role of the Dragon, which she played in the show's Seattle production.
Shrek the Musical stars Tony Award nominee Brian d'Arcy James as Shrek, Tony Award winner Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona, Tony Award nominee Christopher Sieber as Lord Farquaad and Tony Award nominee John Tartaglia as Pinocchio.
The production begins preview performances November 8 at the Broadway Theatre, but it opens officially December 14.
Shrek the Musical played a pre-Broadway engagement at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre August 14 until September 21 and it receiver rather encouraging notices.
The Broadway version is directed by Jason Moore, who staged the Tony Award–winning Best Musical, Avenue Q and Jerry Springer - The Opera in Concert at Carnegie Hall, has book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and music by Jeanine Tesori. The performance is produced by DreamWorks Theatricals and Neal Street Prods.
Shrek The Musical is based on a popular 1990 book by William Steig. The characters of Shrek, Donkey and Fiona, who live in "Far, Far Away," have been featured in three major animated films.
