“Knight Rider” definitely needs a makeover. As producers of
the NBC drama decided to give the series a face-lift after it won a full-season
pickup last month, we find out that changes include the axing of three of the
show’s regular cast members.
Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Yancey Arias and Bruce Davison will
not be part of the revamped “Knight Rider,” scheduled to start off with
episodes 10 and 11. In addition, the Peacock Network is said to try a rather
pushy scheme that features airing episode 10 on a Sunday in January, following
an NFL football game. The network would subsequently run the show on Wednesday,
offering the second part of the episode during its usual time period.
“It’s a reboot,” “Knight Rider” executive producer/showrunner
Gary Scott Thompson explained, adding that the production team wants to
distance from the current formula and approach the original 1980s series, which
starred David Hasselhoff.
The change would make the drama more appropriate for NBC’s
freshly rearranged Wednesday lineup, which includes crime series such as “Life”
and “Law & Order.”
Don’t worry, however: KITT will not be affected by the decisions,
even if it could use a tune-up.
Although “Knight Rider” debuted in February as a two-hour
movie and drew impressive audiences, last week’s episode of the series lured an
anemic 5.1 million viewers, registering a major decrease compared to the 7.4
million people who tuned in for the September season premiere.
Without three of its regulars, the show will have to concentrate
on the five remaining characters: Mike (Justin Bruening), Sarah (Deanna Russo),
Billy (Paul Campbell), Zoe (Smith Cho) and KITT, voiced by Val Kilmer.
