Central Oklahoma Hit by Severe Storm, More Tornadoes Expected

Several powerful storms hit central Oklahoma on Tuesday uprooting trees, demolishing homes and killing eight people. As if this wasn’t enough, the storms are expected to continue through Wednesday, weather experts said.

Authorities issued a tornado warning early Wednesday for central Oklahoma. Severe storms are expected to hit parts of Arkansas as well, said the National Weather Service.

The tornado that hit Oklahoma City on Tuesday afternoon carved a path of destruction stretching on several miles. Numerous homes and businesses were wrecked by the powerful wind. The Oklahoma County Election Board was left without electricity while votes for a school board election were being counted. Two apartment buildings were damaged and power lines fell on an intersection. Authorities told motorists to remain inside their cars until the lines were cleared.

As much as 26,000 homes and businesses lost power, said Oklahoma Gas and Electric spokesman Brian Alford. Most of them were in north Oklahoma City.

All the 8 deaths caused by the severe storms occurred in Lone Grove, about 90 miles south of Oklahoma City. About 50 people were injured, the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management said. The towns of Pawnee and Edmond were also badly hit.

In Edmond, the twister hit a business park so hard that it turned a body shop and the vehicles inside into a twisted ball of metal.

Officials of Mercy Memorial Health Center in Ardmore, several miles east of Lone Grove, said the hospital received 46 injured people, seven of them with major injuries.
