Singer Celine Dion has been named as the greatest (scariest?) user of water on Florida’s Treasure Coast, consuming 6.5 million gallons last year, the Palm Beach Post reported.
Considering that the average resident uses about 10,000 gallons a month, Dion’s water usage equals that of about 650 regular homeowners. She tops the list of heavy water users, the Palm Beach Post reports, basing its study of local water usage on utility records.
Renlec Management, Dion’s Montreal-based company, owns 5.7 acres in the island town Jupiter Island and was found to be the region’s unparalleled water consumer. Those 6.5 million gallons of water her estate consumed in a 12-month period ending March are equal to filling a 50-gallon bathtub every four minutes.
Representatives of Dion’s company did not respond to requests to comment on water use at the site, reports the Post. An old house has reportedly been torn down to make way for a 9,800-square-foot home under construction.
Other major consumers live along Martin County’s coastline and use up to 1.6 million gallons a month, more than 250 times the average amount. Among these is notable the presence of golf pro Tiger Woods, who is also building a house on Jupiter Island. His estate used about 3.7 million gallons of water in a year.
An explanation to the water usage came from Woods’ quarters, as Christopher Hubman, who serves on the board of Woods’ charitable foundation, sent an e-mail to the Post, saying new landscaping and large native tress which were transplanted required abundant irrigation.
Ten of Martin County’s top 15 residential water users hailed from Jupiter Island.
