Celebrities Silently Attend Isaac Hayes' Memorial Service

Hollywood's finest joined Isaac Hayes' family and friends at the Hope Presbyterian Church to honor the late singer and actor, who was killed by a stroke last week after being found unconscious at his home.

The 65-year-old soul singer was remembered in a public service in Memphis, Tennessee on Saturday, where a wide array of celebs were in attendance, from Jesse Jackson, who knew Hayes through his civil rights activism, to fellow Scientologist Kelly Preston.

"He was a lovely man, always involved with causes," civil rights leader Rev Jesse Jackson said before the service. "He was a lovely man, always involved with causes," civil rights leader Rev Jesse Jackson said before the service.

There was also a private service on Sunday, which was attended by Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes and Tom Cruise, who silently flew in for the event.

"What would you say if you were flying into Memphis and they said you are about to land at Isaac Hayes International Airport," U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen asked, drawing a huge burst of applause during a four-hour service, which started with a drum march and included speeches, musical performances, photos, and video clips.

"He is a world person who the world will miss," Cohen said.

Al Sharpton along with actress Anne Archer, "Shaft" star Richard Roundtree, Chuck D. Bootsy Collins, Doug E. Fresh and U.S. Representative John Lewis, were also present at Monday's memorial, among a crowd of over 3,000 mourners.

Hayes was eulogized as a citizen of the world - an international superstar who never forgot his humble West Tennessee roots.

"I'll never forget standing there on the first tee prior to teeing off, and he started kind of laughing inwardly," recalled actor Richard Roundtree. "I said, 'What's happening man?'  He said, 'Tree' - he called me tree - he said, 'I picked cotton here. When I was a boy.' That blew me away."

Famous for landing his voice to Chef in the TV comedy series "South Park," Hayes was praised as an innovator and pioneer, his music directly influenced rap and hip-hop.

"Hip-hop wouldn't be what it is without Isaac Hayes," Rapper and record producer Doug E Fresh said outside the Hope Presbyterian Church.

But what people were mostly reminded of was Hayes' humanitarian activities from his work at the school in Ghana to his work with Stax.

"I worked with him on a lot of human rights issues, and I found him an amazing man who would speak up for what was right," recalled actress Anne Archer.

Many said Hayes was a man whose passing changed those closest to him forever.

"There's a word called 'everything,' and that's what I miss about him," said close friend David Porter.  "I mean, we were linked together in such a way that words can't express what's inside of me. As I know, I've gotta go forward without an extended part of my life."

The other side of the local coin included his 11 grown children, three ex-wives, 2-year-old son, his widow, and many friends who had come in cars, buses and trains from all over the country to pay their final respects. Booker T Jones, of Booker T and the MGs, took three flights to Memphis to make the Monday service after playing in New York on Friday night and Nantucket on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, movie and TV actor/stand-up comedian Bernie Mac, who died on  the same weekend as Hayes, was remembered during a Chicago memorial service which drew in thousands of fans, friends and co-stars as well. Jesse Jackson attended this service, too. Other mourners included Chris Rock and Cedric the Entertainer, who was reportedly inconsolable at the loss of his Kings of Comedy comrade.
