While some people celebrated Thanksgiving by staying home and enjoying a traditional meal with their friends and families, some Hollywood celebrities shared the holiday spirit by serving meals to those less fortunate.

Actors Kirk Douglas, Harrison Ford, Calista Flockhart, Nia Long and "The Hills" star Spencer Pratt were among the famous faces helping out at the annual feast at downtown’s Los Angeles Mission.

Sporting red aprons and plastic gloves, the stars stood alongside volunteers hading out plates of turkey drumsticks, mashed potatoes and gravy, rolls, vegetables and pumpkin pie.

"It's very grounding," said Long, who dished out vegetables and rolls with her 7-year-old son. "I feel grateful for all the things I have."

LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa also joined the group and he actually washed homeless people’s feet as part of the event.

"He washed my feet, and it was so special," Skid Row resident Yasmine Villalobos said. "I will remember it forever."

Douglas, who has been volunteering with the LA Mission for years, and helped establish their Anne Douglas Center for Women, explained the event’s impact on celebs.

"Their involvement will help their souls as much as it helps the guests being served," he said in a mission press release.

On the other coast of the continent, in New York, crowds gathered for the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade offering a mix of new attraction and longtime favorites.

The lineup included three new balloons, 2,000 cheerleaders, 800 clowns, the Radio City Rockettes and 11 marching bands, among them the Virginia Tech Regimental band, performing tribute to the victims of last spring’s campus shooting.
