Participants at the Television Critics Association's annual press tour were treated with a full-length episode of Cartoon Network's latest "Star Wars: Clone Wars" animated series, prompting a wave of positive responses from the audience, Variety reported.
While nobody usually dares show a full episode to the room, Cartoon Network successfully went ahead with the screening of a full episode, keeping the critics in the room and giving them a chance to discuss the show with its producer David Filoni.
"It's so great that you guys saw an episode so I can finally talk about this. It's really a relief" Filoni said.
The 22-episode series will make its debut this fall, although the premiere date hasn't been announced yet. The show comes on the heels of the big-screen version of "Clone Wars," which will be released in theaters Aug. 10. According to the Associated Press, "the movie and TV show are set between the action of the second and third chapters of Lucas's prequel trilogy, 'Attack of the Clones' and ‘Revenge of the Sith.'"
According to reports, critics' first reactions were mostly positive, focusing on the show's dazzling visuals, but raising questions whether it's appealing enough for young children.
Asked whether this series would appeal to children who haven't grown up watching the "Star Wars" films, Filoni replied: "Every time I go to Toys R Us, I see kids picking up light sabers and imagining they're in a galaxy far, far away. I hope those fans will watch and enjoy this. And maybe listen to Yoda."
The screened episode featured Master Yoda, whose backwards syntax has been dramatically simplified from the way he spoke in the big screen movies, trying to evade various Separatist traps while fighting the droids, and introduced a new villain, the gothic Ventress, an apprentice of Count Dooku, whom Filoni described as "a bit sensuous" and "serpent-like."
