Los Angeles - High flying Vince Carter was back in the lineup when the New Jersey Nets completed a sweep of the Miami Heat, with a 94-92 victory on Sunday at the 02 Arena in London.
The Nets returned home from their NBA Europe Live Tour with a 2-0 preseason record.
"You always want to be able to do more, but I think we made some strides," said Nets coach Lawrence Frank in summarizing the overseas trip. "We still obviously have a lot of growth to be made. But evaluating it, it was a very positive trip."
Carter tweaked his left hamstring in the second quarter of the Net's 100-98 overtime victory over the Heat on Thursday in Paris. However, the all-star swingman appeared healthy and provided his teammates with late game leadership scoring 19 points, including three free throws, in the final eight seconds.
China's Yi Jianlian, acquired in an off-season trade with Milwaukee, tossed in 17 points in his debut for the Nets, who held on after blowing a 19-point, first-quarter cushion.
Marcus Banks scored 19 points and Dwyane Wade added 18 for the Heat (0-3) who committed a whopping 27 turnovers in the contest.
"These two close-game situations are invaluable for the younger players, and also the veteran guys," Heat rookie coach Erik Spoelstra said. "But now as we move forward and we get back to Miami we really have to have a productive week."
Carter's two free throws gave the Nets a four-point lead before Banks nailed a three-pointer to pull Miami within 93-92 with four ticks remaining. Again, Carter went to the free throw line after being fouled. This time, he missed the second attempt, but the Heat lost the ball out of bounds on the final play of the game.
Elsewhere Utah Jazz 93, Portland Trail Blazers 80 Russian Andrei Kirilenko scored 15 points, and sharpshooting Kyle Korver netted 11 of his 14 in the second half, sparking the Jazz past the short-handed Blazers in preseason play.
All-star forward Carlos Boozer had 12 points in his preseason debut, while Turkey's Mehmet Okur added all 11 of his after intermission, when the Jazz outscored their hosts, 58-42.
French rookie Nicolas Batum led the Trail Blazers (2-2) with a game-high 16 points and Travis Outlaw followed with 14.
Portland played without LaMarcus Aldridge (rested), Brandon Roy (recovering from knee surgery), Spanish rookie Rudy Fernandez (left ankle sprain) and Steve Blake (left hamstring strain).
Blazers Martell Webster is expected to be sidelined at least eight weeks after fracturing a bone in his foot in the exhibition opener.
Philadelphia 76ers 85, Toronto Raptors 79 Thaddeus Young tossed in a game-high 17 points and rookie Marreese Speights added 10 of his 12 in the final quarter, sending the Sixers (2-1) past the host Raptors.
Jason Kapono led Toronto (2-1) with 14 points, but all-star forward Chris Bosh was held to just four, on one-of-five shooting in 23 minutes.
LA Lakers 94, Sacramento Kings 89 Spain's Pau Gasol scored 12 points and Kobe Bryant added nine - before both sat out the final quarter - as the Lakers (1-2) edged the Kings in Las Vegas, for their first preseason victory.
Trailing by 12 points midway through the final quarter, the Kings pulled to within 92-89 on Shelden Williams' tip-in with 37 seconds left. However, Lakers rookie Joe Crawford (six points) sank two free throws with 18 seconds to seal the win.
Jason Thompson scored 15 points and John Salmons added 11 for the Kings (1-2) who shot an icy 37 per cent (32-of-86) from the floor.
