The naming of Carol Bartz as Yahoo Inc.’s CEO was received with mixed reactions, as aside from the ones considering it a great business move, there are some who believe that her lack of experience when it comes to the Internet might turn out to be decisive and the company will surely suffer.
The fact of the matter is that Carol Bartz proved herself on numerous ocasions, showing her executive skills at Autodesk Inc., where she turned the business into an extremely successful enterprise.
At Yahoo, she took over the position left vacant by the company’s co-founder Jerry Yang, who will assume his former post of Chief Yahoo. Bartz stated that Yang’s role inside the company is very important as "No one knows more about Yahoo than Jerry," she explained.
Bartz does not appear to be in a hurry and she wants to first get accustomed with the business before preparing the strategy. She announced that several talks with the company’s employees, customers and investors will soon take place in order to fully understand the phases needed to get things back on track. The company failed to complete a partnership with Microsoft Corp. last November, did not manage to start an online advertising deal with Google Inc. and had to go through two rounds of layoffs.
"I wouldn't have taken the job if I didn't believe there's a huge opportunity here," Bartz added. "I just see this as a company with enormous assets that, frankly, could use a little management."
