Carla Bruni Flirts with Press

Carla Bruni, the supermodel turned singer who has the world talking of her whirlwind romance with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, was in a teasing mood when she told a French publication this week that she and the president had not married – yet.

Though their relationship is only a few months old, French president Nicolas Sarkozy and former supermodel Carla Bruni have set the media on fire, generating endless rumors that they are either engaged, married, or expecting their first child together.

The couple went to Egypt on a romantic holiday last month and pictures immortalizing their romantic joy were promptly taken by photographers. Rumors have been growing that the two have already married in secret.

The uncertain status of their relationship has put Indian officials in a bit of a spot, as an upcoming official state visit to India from Sarkozy was troubling them in regards to protocol: how were officials to treat Bruni? As a First Lady, a “First Girlfriend,” a member of the presidential delegation, a private visitor?

The ambiguous situation has reportedly caused Indian officials plenty of analyzing, without reaching a conclusion. French officials on their part kept quiet, refusing to comment on Bruni’s status in relation with the president.

The 40-year-old former supermodel, who launched a singing career several years ago, told French publication Liberation Tuesday, Jan. 22, that she and Sarkozy were not married “yet,” although “it is in our plans.”

She also revealed that she would not accompany her lover to India. “I cannot take part in an official trip with the President,” The Times Online quotes her as telling the paper.

Bruni explained her absence by saying she has recording commitments on her third album and that she cannot leave the country.

The Times notes that her comment, “Also for health reasons it's not good,” could refer to the abundance of social obligations involved in such a visit. Or maybe this was her subtle way of fuelling rumors that she is with child.

Sarkozy, 52, also helped fuel rumors about a secret wedding earlier this month when he said during a news conference that he wished to marry Bruni and that they would probably announce the event only after it had occurred.
