The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas was marked by the people from ford who displayed their ideas and ambitions for the future. Ford announced on Thursday the innovations their cars will get, and it was no surprise that the focus was put on car connectivity.
Ford has actually worked a lot on this and is now claiming that they are nearing 1 million Sync-equipped cars on the road. Ford’s connectivity goal is based on three simple principles, beamed connectivity, from satellites, brought-in connectivity, from mobile phones and built-in connectivity.
Ford announced that they will be able to sync the car with a mobile phone, like the iPhone for example, in such a way that one could control the gadget from the commands on the steering wheel.
Ford also had Microsoft head Steve Ballmer talk at the presentation, underlining the importance of car connectivity. Ford declared that they are now trying to think more like an electronics company. Ford will allow for the development of applications by third parties, downloadable and installable via a USB flash drive.
There was also a lot of talk about the MyKey system, designed to make teenager’s driving more tempered. MyKey is a system that will limit the maximum speed the car can reach at 80 mph, limit the volume of the car stereo at 40% and warn though sound alerts if the seatbelts aren’t worn. Parents will also be able to set the system to sound warnings if the car reaches a threshold of 45, 55 or 65 mph.
