Joe Johnston will be the one to lead Captain America to the
big screen. The director of “Jurasic Park III” has agreed to helm the
comic-book hero movie project, which is scheduled for release in 2011 via
Marvel Studios.
Although no writers have been assigned yet for “First
Avenger: Captain America,”
a film whose action takes place during World War II, the studio is expected to appoint
several people soon.
Captain America
was conceived in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon for Timely Comics and
represents the epic double of Steve Rogers, who is discarded by the Army for
his poor health, thus submitting himself to a test that flies him to the high point of human
structure. Captain America
and his unyielding shield shortly became representatives of fight and triumph,
passing beyond the world of comics.
In spite of the fact that the popular character almost
vanished in the 1950s, it was renewed by Marvel Comics and was included in the
all-star Avengers array.
Captain America
was introduced in the 1990 film of the same name, but the production starring
Matt Salinger only saw a video release.
Joe Johnston met with Marvel a couple of years ago and
Captain America-related talks have been in the public eye ever since.
The director has also helmed “Hidalgo,” “October Sky” and “Jumanji.”
