The line up for this year’s Cannes Film Festival, which reached its 61st editions, was made public this morning in France’s capital, Paris.
"Changeling," the Clint Eastwood-directed film in which Angelina Jolie is starring, was the surprise of the line up as a last hour addition. The same can be said about Steven Soderbergh's two Che Guevara films: "The Argentine" and "Guerrilla."
Soderbergh's movies will be screened back to back on May 21.
However, organizers didn’t announce the films that will open and close the festival. The festival general manager Thierry Fremaux told journalists at Paris' Grand Hotel he will announce those films at a later date. The festival starts May 14 and closes on the 25th.
Other Americans participating at the festival are Charlie Kaufman and Steven Spielberg.
Kaufman enters the Cannes Film Festival with his directorial debut, "Synedoche, New York", a film in which Philip Seymour Hoffman, Michelle Williams, Emily Watson and Catherine Keener star.
Spielberg hasn’t participated at the Cannes Festival since 1985 and this year he will premiere „Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull", a film which includes actors Harrison Ford and Australian actress Cate Blanchett. The movie will be screened out of competition.
Woody Allen's enters the festival with "Vicky Cristina Barcelona", a movie playing in the same category with Emir Kusturica's "Maradona." The Serbian director already won the prize at the Canned Festival twice in 1985 and 1995.
The festival screened 4,025 films for consideration this year, according to reports.
This year, Natalie Portman will be in the jury which is to be presided over by Sean Penn.
The line up includes other famous names such as Wim Wenders with „The Palermo Shooting," Atom Egoyan with "Adoration" and Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas' "Linha de Passe."
