This looks like a bad joke: parents putting their child out
for sale. But, it is not. A couple actually did it.
According to Reuters, a Canadian couple was arrested Tuesday
because they offered to sell their seven-day-old baby girl, putting out an
offer of C$10,000 (5,000 pounds) on Craigslist.
The police was announced by a woman who saw the add on the
site and they managed to find the parents thanks to a cell phone number which
was put in the offer.
Authorities said that the parents told them they were not
serious about selling their baby and that it was just a hoax. The Canadian
couple has been arrested for public mischief and the investigation would
continue.
According to Globe and Mail, Marilyn Bateman from Maple Ridge,
B.C., was looking for furniture when she saw the advertisement.
The offer described the baby: “A new baby girl, seven days
old, healthy and very cute. Can't afford and unexpected. Looking for a good
home. Please call ASAP,” reported Globe and Mail.
The couple’s identity was not made public, but the police
said that the parents have had some trouble with drug addiction in the past.
The baby was taken from them.
It remains to see the authorities' decision regarding the
parents.
