A recent study conducted by the researchers at the University of Barcelona reached the conclusion that caffeine has a faster action for men than women. The detailed presentation is available in the journal Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry.
668 healthy volunteers were involved in the test, and they were asked to drink a normal espresso with about 100 milligrams of caffeine or a decaffeinated espresso, with about 5 milligrams of caffeine.
"Although both the men and women saw an improvement in their activity levels with the coffee, which increased in later measurements, we observed a greater impact among the males," explained lead researcher Ana Adan in an interview with Spain’s Scientific Information and News Service.
After drinking the espresso, the researcher described the men as “peppy” after just 10 minutes. The women also appeared to be alert, but the effects were different to the ones registed by men. The stimulating effects begin just a few minutes after drinking it, but the peak is usualy after 45 minutes, when the caffeine is completely absorbed into the bloodstream.
“Numerous studies have demonstrated the stimulant effects of caffeine, but none of these have looked at their effects in terms of the consumer’s gender,” said Ana Adan. She also added that people should consider their needs and opt for a decaffeinated coffee which might actually help, instead of an uneffective and potentially agravating normal coffee.
These tests are very appreciated, as they might lead one day to some dietary recommendations based on certain details such as age and body size.
