A new report released by the US Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention places Huntington,
West Virginia at the bottom of the
list when it comes to health. The report says nearly half of the adults in the
five-county metropolitan area are obese and Huntington leads in heart disease, diabetes
and elderly people who have lost their teeth. About 31 percent of Huntington residents don’t
exercise, 22 percent have heart disease and 13 percent have diabetes. Almost
half of those older than 65 have lost their natural teeth.
At the top of the list is Burlington,
Vt., the healthiest city in the United States. The
report says 92 percent of the Burlington
residents are in good or great health. The city is among the best in exercise
and lowest in obesity and diabetes. When it comes to the age of its residents, Burlington is younger, with an average age of 37, compared
to 40 in Huntington.
Also, Burlington
is better off financially, a situation that could explain the great health of
its residents. Having enough money to eat healthy and look for health care when
it is needed are two reasons that surely improve someone’s life. Also, education
seems to play a central role in searching appropriate health care. About 8
percent of Burlington’s residents are living at
the federal poverty level, compared to 19 percent in Huntington, the report shows.
When it comes to physical activity, “there’s this norm of a
lot of activity” in Burlington, said Chris
Finley, Vermont’s deputy health commissioner,
who works in Burlington.
Residents here are used to bicycling, hiking, skiing and other exercises, activities
that make them more vivid and relaxed with their daily lives.
