Recently,
the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have
released a report revealing that the nation’s healthiest city was Burlington,
Vermont.
According to the CDC, 92 percent of the residents of Burlington,
which is Vermont’s largest city, have stated that they were in good or great health,
the metropolitan area being also among the ones that registered some of the
lowest obesity and diabetes rates in the U.S.
Moreover, Burlington ranked high in terms of the number of
people who exercised regularly, the CDC further reported.
As for the least healthy city nationwide, the study
conducted by the CDC has showed that it was Huntington, West Virginia, where
approximately half of the residents are currently obese.
The Census Bureau has reported that the average age of Burlington’s population was 37, whereas in
Huntington, an average age of 40 was estimated.
In addition, only 8 percent of Vermont’s largest city’s
residents were registered as living at the federal poverty level, while in West
Virginia’s aforementioned city, this percentage rose to 19. As for the
education level amongst Burlington and Huntington residents, 40 percent of the
people living in the former area were said to had had a college bachelor's degree,
compared to 15 percent of those in the latter city.
Even though both cities are college towns, with junk food
being the most common choice for their residents, Burlington has a major
advantage over Huntington, since its population is much more into practicing bicycling,
hiking and skiing, along with several other exercises that keep them fit and
healthy.
