Although CBS was again the most-watched network last week,
thus claiming its 11th consecutive weekly triumph among total
viewers, NBC was boosted by the popular Sunday night football game between the
New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys and managed to top the prime-time ratings,
according to figures released on Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research.
CBS averaged 11.9 million viewers throughout the week ended
December 14 and was followed by NBC with 8.8 million viewers, ABC with 6.3
million viewers and Fox with 6 million viewers.
Not only was NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” the week’s
most-watched show, as 23.1 million people tuned in for the game, but it also
drew the best audiences in the three-year history of the much-loved franchise.
With seven programs in the Top 10 of the week’s most
successful shows, CBS gained even more power. “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”
lured 20.86 million viewers and was the second most-watched program of the
week, while “60 Minutes,” “Two and a Half Men” and “Criminal Minds” claimed the
following positions in the Top 5.
“House” was Fox’s most popular show last week with 14.05
million viewers, while ABC’s ratings were boosted by “A Charlie Brown
Christmas,” which lured 11.02 million viewers.
NBC saw a good result from “The Office” as well, which was
watched by 8.8 million people, probably because ABC broadcast a previously-aired
episode of hit medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy.”
NBC’s “Nightly News” led the evening newscasts with an
average of 10 million viewers, ABC’s “World News” came in second with 8.6
million viewers and the “CBS Evening News” drew 7.1 million viewers.
