CBS Weekly Ratings Increased By Basketball Broadcast

CBS' coverage of the NCAA men's college basketball championship placed the network on the spot on Monday's overall ratings, although ABC snagged the most eyeballs in the adults 18-49 demographic.

According to preliminary affiliate-based estimates from Nielsen, the overtime win by Kansas over Memphis was seen by an average of 19.5 million viewers; last year's game averaged 19.6 million viewers, Reuters reported. The Kansas-North Carolina NCAA tournament semifinal gave CBS a big audience on Saturday, normally a slow night for network television.

The basketball game was followed by repeats of CBS’s "Big Bang Theory" at 8 p.m. (10.2 million) and "Two and a Half Men" at 8:30 (12.2 million). For the three-week tournament, CBS averaged a 5.6 household rating/12 share for all games, down from a 6.1/13 last year.

Overall, for the week ended Sunday, April 6, CBS averaged 11.5 million viewers (7.2 rating, 12 share), Fox had 9.6 million (5.9, 10), ABC 7.6 million (4.9, 8), NBC 6.3 million (4.2, 7) and the CW 2.2 million (1.4, 2).

Although Fox's "American Idol" and ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" dominated last week, CBS drew 20.6 million viewers to the return of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."

For the first time since January, CBS won the viewership race having every show from No. 6 through 15 in Nielsen's rankings of the most popular programs last week.

ABC earned its highest ratings early in the night due to "Dancing With the Stars," which averaged 19.5 million viewers from 8 to 9:30 p.m., while the rest of ABC's lineup "Samantha Who?" at 9:30 p.m. (11 million) and "The Bachelor" at 10 p.m. (7.2 million), struggled to attract comparable ratings.

NBC had a quiet week, represented in the top 20 only by Tuesday's "Biggest Loser" (3.3/8, 8.17m) and Thursday's first run return of "My Name Is Earl" (3.2/9, 7.53m). Net didn't do much Sunday with its repurposed premieres of USA dramas "Monk" (1.5/4, 5.74m) and "Psych" (1.3/3, 3.98m).
