It seems funny when you first hear the story, but it is not!
On January, Austin Firefighter Michael Pooler decided to make
a quick stop and grab a burger on his way to the place where the fire ignited,
thus delaying the emergency response by two minutes, Active Fire Chief Jim
Evans said, according to the Houston Chronicle. The call was made by a woman
who was suffering respiratory distress.
“Immediate response to 911 call is the very essence of what
it means to be an Austin firefighter…Because of his selfish and highly
unprofessional actions, he has no right to remain an Austin firefighter,” said
a memo released by Evans on Tuesday.
He further added that in the case of a major fire, two
minutes are very important, as they could save a person’s life. “Two minutes
can seem like an eternity.”
Fortunately, paramedics from Austin-Travis County Emergency
Medical Services reached the woman before firefighters and canceled the
firefighter response. There is no word on her condition.
Pooler, a 12-year veteran of the Fire Department, declined
through a union representative to comment on the firing, which happened after a
hearing Friday. According to Austin Association of Professional Firefighters
Secretary Palmer Buck, Pooler does not have an attorney, but he plans to appeal
the firing.
