Buenos Aires Sees First Snow Since 1918

Most residents of Argentina’s capital have not been around long enough to remember the last snowfall in Buenos Aires, back in 1918. They certainly will remember Monday’s snowflakes though!

Several South American countries have been experiencing unusually cold weather, while Buenos Aires even saw snow for the first time in nearly 90 years.

Three persons have reportedly lost their lives due to exposure to the cold, two in Argentina and one in Chile. Temperatures fell to -18C (0F) in Chile, in its southern Araucania region.

In Argentina’s southern region of Patagonia, temperatures sank below -20C. In some parts of Argentinean province Rio Negro registered temperatures as low as -22C (-8F).

The Andes mountain range has been covered with snow, with several provinces there placed under a storm alert, as reported by the national weather center.

The snowfall in Buenos Aires, the first since 1918, was overwhelming for many of the capital’s residents, as they touched the snowflakes in disbelief and took photographs.

This has been so far one of South America’s coldest winters ever. Meteorologists forecasted several more days of cold.
