Rob Reiner’s comedy "The Bucket List" starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman took the lead at this weekend’s box office with $19.5 million, pushing Nicolas Cage’s "Nation Treasure: Book of Secrets" to the fourth place after a three-week lead.
Warner Bros.' comedy about two dying older men, who set out to accomplish their last wishes after being diagnosed with cancer in terminal phase and ending up in the same hospital room.
"This was definitely a win for the older audience," Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers, was quoted by Associated Press as saying of "The Bucket List." "The conventional wisdom is the younger audience drives the box office."
The film, which had opened the previous week in a limited 16-screen release "skews to older audiences, but I think the star power is what brought the audience," Dergarabedian said. "Never underestimate the clout of the older movie audience."
"The Bucket List" was closely followed by Sony Pictures’ urban crime comedy "First Sunday," featuring Ice Cube and Tracy Morgan, which drew in $19 million.
The two films led the way in dethroning "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," which was the No. 1 box-office draw for three consecutive weeks. The Disney film dropped to fourth place.
"These two films appealed to different audiences and both did very well," Dergarabedian said. "January is not known as a hot month for box office."
Teen drama "Juno" starring Ellen Page and "Superbad’s" Michael Cerra, ranked third with about $14 million, six weeks after its release. Another former champ, Will Smith's "I Am Legend," was No. 6 with $2.6 million.
