Celebrity supporters are aplenty for Democratic presidential
nominee Barack Obama and rock veterans Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel have
just joined the ranks.
This is to be a two-fold event: on one hand, it is the first
time that Bruce “The Boss” Springsteen and Billy “The Piano Man” Joel have ever
played at the same concert, per the organizers, and on the other hand, the
musicians are both major public figures to manifest support for Barack Obama.
Springsteen and Joel will perform on October 16 at the
Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City.
They will be joined by other performers who are yet to be announced.
Those wishing to participate at the benefit event and to
show their support for Obama’s campaign can do so by acquiring tickets ranging
in price from $500 to $10,000 - balcony tickets cost $500, “premiere” seats
cost $2,500 and lounge tickets are available for $10,000.
The Huffington Post was first to report the campaigning
news.
Springsteen very recently made headlines when the NFL
confirmed the New Jersey
rocker and the E Street Band would perform during the Super Bowl XLIII halftime
show that is to take place on Feb. 1, 2009.
Of course, this was a badly kept secret as rumors had
appeared as early as August that Springsteen would follow in a line of
venerable acts such as Prince, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones and last
year’s guests, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.
References to 2004’s infamous “wardrobe malfunction”
starring Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake were unavoidable, with numerous
jokes as to how Springsteen is sure not to provide such a tragicomical moment.
As for Billy Joel, he will perform at the Hammerstein Ballroom
and then embark on a month-long tour of China,
Australia, Japan and New Zealand on Nov. 12.
