Brooklyn Teen Admits to Creating Worms that Hit Twitter

Starting Saturday and continuing through Sunday, micro-blogging Web site Twitter was hit with at least three different worms.  The three worms were created by Michael "Mikeyy" Mooney, the 17-year-old boy who created StalkDaily.com, a site which infected numerous Twitter users via links to it.

Mikeyy, a teenager from Brooklyn, acknowledged the fact that he was behind the worm attacks. He created the three worms. His worm posted unwanted tweets (messages) on users pages. The messages started showing up on Sunday and read:
"Mikeyy I am done...,"
"MikeyyMikeyy is done…" and
"Twitter please fix this, regards Mikeyy."

In an interview with CNET News, the Brooklyn teen said he created the worm because he was bored.

"I thought about it later and basically did it because I was bored," Michael said.

"And I didn't think Twitter would fix (the flaw) very soon. But I didn't think it would spread as far or as fast as it did."

The teen said he has been creating worms for the past three years. However, he underlined the fact that his worms weren’t designed to do much damage and that this was his last worm. He hopes he’ll get a job as a security analyst on day.

"I'm done with Twitter," said Michael, CNET News reported.

The worm worked its way into Twitter with four accounts that were created on the micro-blogging site and which began spreading the worm at about 2 a.m. Saturday, according to data from the blog of Biz Stone, one of the founders of the popular micro-blogging service. The virus worm called StalkDaily spread by exploiting a cross-site scripting vulnerability in the Twitter service and infected numerous accounts.

The tweets sent by the infected accounts spread the worm. Twitter users who visited the profiles of the users that sent the malicious links were instantly infected them selves. The messages promoted the site created by Michael and read "I love www.StalkDaily.com" and "Dude, www.StalkDaily.com is awesome. What's the fuss?"

A second big attack was recorded on late Saturday. About 100 accounts were infected during this attack. The third attack occurred Sunday. Biz Stone said in a blog post that the Twitter staff deleted as many as 10,000 tweets that were sent to spread the worm.

In the interview, the teenager said he was sorry for hat he has done and that he is aware that he really is in trouble and could end up in jail.

"I have come clean and have accepted the responsibility for the worm," the teen said. He added that he wasn’t the one who left the vulnerability hole open. Twitter said it closed the vulnerability hole after the attacks, but warned that the worm will continue to spread a bit in the next few days.

Twitter did not say whether it would contact law enforcement officials and did not contact Michael Mooney yet.
