Brooklyn Infant Fatally Bitten by Pet Doberman

An eight-month-old infant was bitten by the family pet Doberman pinscher and died due to severe head injury on Thursday, police reports shows.

The grandmother was taking care of the boy - Andrew Stein – but, as he was laying on a blanket on the living room, the Doberman bit him on the head according to neighbors.

Police along with Emergency Medical Services were immediately called to the Windsor apartment to intervene shortly before 2 p.m. and the child was rushed to the nearest hospital, but the doctors couldn’t do much about his condition and he was pronounced dead an hour later.

The little boy’s grandmother reportedly tried to get the dog off Andrew but just wouldn't let go.

"The dog had the baby on the floor," said Leonardo Collado, 46, superintendent of the building where the Stein family lives. "[The grandmother] told me she was screaming for help because the dog had the baby on the floor and she couldn't get the baby away from the dog."

There were no charges brought upon anyone yet. The 62-pound pet Doberman was tranquilized and it’s now at an animal care center.

Andrew’s grandmother went next door for help and found neighbor Jesus Rivera managed to get the baby out of the dog’s jaws. Then he wrapped the severely injured child in a blanket and his wife called the police.

"I'm sure that the guilt must be overwhelming. Sometimes the guilt is more than the actual pain. ... For her to probably feel responsible, she's gonna need a lot of love," neighbor Eugene Coco said about the boy’s grandmother.

The police report showed that the infant’s skull was easily penetrated by the Doberman’s bite. Andrew couldn’t be saved and died on the way to Kings County Hospital.

According to the neighbors, Maccabee – the Doberman – was very friendly and docile. Cops are still investigating what provoked the dog to behave so violent, but such accidents continue to show how unpredictable animals are and what a danger they pose.
