Is it an unlucky streak or bad management that has hurt “Grey’s Anatomy” the most? First, they let go of Isaiah Washington, who played Preston Burke, just as he was about to marry Sandra Oh’s character, Christina Yang. They managed to salvage that, although it was pretty unlikely for Burke to just leave Yang at the altar – the character had much more integrity than that. But, at least there was some sort of explanation as to what happened to the cardio-thoracic surgeon. Also, it did offer viewers the chance to see an interesting side of Christina Yang. Washington’s firing at least had a valid reason, as Washington made several offensive comments about T.R. Night (George O’Malley), regarding the latter’s sexual orientation.
ABC has now decided to let go of another cast member, again when two characters are involved in a relationship. Brooke Smith plays Erica Hahn, and her character is currently involved with Sara Ramirez’s character, Calliope Torres. This raises the question whether ABC has something against lesbianism? The network said it wasn’t about the character’s sexual orientation, as Sara Ramirez has not been fired, and her character is obviously bisexual. The network’s official position is that Erica Hahn’s character and the relationship with Torres didn’t have the necessary chemistry or appeal to make viewers keep tuning in to watch “Grey’s Anatomy”. Everyone is wondering which viewers ABC is referring to, as the decision has caused massive uproar amongst “Grey’s Anatomy” fans. The fact that Smith is being fired and not the writers of “Grey’s” prompt us to believe that ABC may have a problem with the actress, and that lesbianism was not the issue. In fact ABC officials have said that a bisexual character will be returning to the show. It’s still peculiar why no one has given a clear and more detailed reason as to why a character loved by fans is getting the cut.
