Jane Fonda, the famous Oscar-winning actress, has been absent from the Broadway stages for 46 years. In 2009, however, the beloved star will return to Broadway, when she will perform in a play called “33 Variations”.
She won two Academy Awards for her performance in “Klute” (1972) and “Coming Home” (1979). She starred in numerous famous movies, among which “The China Syndrome”, “Barefoot in the Park”, “Nine to Five” or “Golden Pond”. Except for her career as an actress, Jane Fonda is also a dedicated activist, an author – she released her autobiography “My Life So Far,” which was an instant success – and a true exercise guru.
“33 Variations” was written and directed by Moises Kaufman. It focuses on Beethoven’s fascination with a trivial waltz, all the while following the story of Katherine Brandt, a modern-day musicologist, on the path of discovering the root of the composer’s obsession. Fonda was offered and has accepted the part of Katherine Brandt. The play is not only Fonda’s comeback play, but it is also a cornerstone for Kaufman, given that “33 Variations” is his first Broadway play.
Jane Fonda is openly excited about her comeback. In a statement, the actress said she can hardly wait to work with Kaufman on his new play and on a part that she understands very well.
Fonda made her Broadway debut in 1960, with “There Was a Little Girl”, which earned her a Tony nomination. Three years later, in 1963, she ended her Broadway career – or so it seemed at the time – with “Strange Interlude”. Fonda, now aged 70, has decided to take on the challenge of playing a part in a Broadway play again.
