There are so many things to say about Britney Spears that
each and every one of us could write a book or at least a booklet.
The latest piece of news about the pop star is related to
the fact that she received three nods at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.
Brit-Brit was shortlisted for the best female video and best pop video
categories, but most importantly, she is a nominee for the most craved trophy
of the show, The Best Video Of The Year.
The song that brought her the more or
less surprising or deserved three nods is “Piece of Me,” in which she sings
about her dramatic relationship with the paparazzi and the whole media.
Britney has a long history at the MTV Video Music
Awards. The pop singer has received 16
nods until now, however she hasn’t left with any trophy. Looking back, her
performances at the VMAs have been the perfect reflection of her professional
(and sometimes personal, too) status quo. In the first gigs, she was so full of
stamina, you got tired in your armchair just looking at her. The last year’s
“performance” was a flop, just as she was a wreck professionally and
personally! (And probably last year she would have gotten tired just looking at
us moving our toes, sitting in our armchairs…)
But Britney’s long history with the VMAs also shows
something else. The number of her fans did not shrink, she is still popular and
loved. And she deserves our genuine congratulations on that. And MTV
acknowledged all these and is probably ready to offer her yet another chance –
hence the omnipresent spot featuring her and this year’s host, Russel Brand and
an elephant. (Whether she will deliver a performance or not, it is yet to be
established).
As for the most coveted category, the best video of the
year, she’s got some serious competition. There are the Jonas Brothers, with their
“Burnin’ Up” clip, Chris Brown’s “Forever,” alongside “When I Grow Up” coming
from The Pussycat Dolls and The Ting Tings’ “Shut Up and Let Me Go.”
On Friday MTV disclosed the nominees in another eagerly
awaited category, the best rock video. Slipknot (“Psychosocial”) will compete
with Paramore’s “CrushCrushCrush” clip, Linkin Park’s “Shadow of the Day” and
the videos signed by the Foo Fighters (“The Pretender”) and Fall Out Boy (“Beat
It”).
This year’s gig will be held at the iconic Paramount
Pictures Studios in Hollywood,
starting from 9 p.m. on September 7.
