While the singer’s music might not be topping any charts, Britney Spears is still selling more than any other celebrity on eBay.
More than 34,000 Britney Spears-related items, ranging from copies of signed pictures to gloves she supposedly wore at a New York Jets game to a piece of chewed gum, were auctioned on the website over the past year, outselling fellow party girls Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.
According to eBay, the number of Spears-related items sold on the website totaled 34,345, compared to 27,377 memorabilia associated with Hilton and only 8,099 items Lohan-related things. Fragrances were the most popular items sold for both Spears and Hilton.
Earlier this year, following Spears’ meltdown when she publicly shaved her head, her hair and a can of Red Bull she supposedly drank from, were up for sale just days after the event, with bidders pushing the price up to more than $1,000.
However, they were all outsold by baseball superstar Barry Bonds whose stuff sold more than 145,000 items, including a grilled-cheese sandwich.
"What Americans buy and sell every day is one of the best indications of what they're obsessed with," said Karen Bard, eBay's pop culture expert. "When someone or something is being written about in tabloids or reported about on CNN, if it revs up the American public, you're bound to discover a bidding frenzy for related listings on eBay."
In the meantime, Spears is reportedly threatening the hotel heiress of releasing a videotape of Hilton engaged in lesbian sex with a mutual friend.
According to British tabloid The Sun, the 26-year-old "Gimme More" singer wrote Paris a letter warning her that if she continues being rude to people, the footage will be leaked online.
