Back in
August 2007, Britney Spears was photographed fleeing the scene after having hit
a parked car in California and was consequently charged with driving without a
valid license, since the one she owned only permitted her to drive in Louisiana.
Two days
ago, her trial ended with the case having been declare a mistrial, after the jury
deliberated for eight hours, the deliberation having been preceded by two days
of testimony. Nevertheless, the only thing missing from the Los Angeles
Superior Court was Britney herself, who was not present at her driver’s license
trial.
Had the
case ended in the jury finding Spears guilty as charged, the pop-singer could
have received both a fine and some jail time, but it seems that she has managed to
dodge that bullet.
Prosecutors have yet to state whether they would be
requesting a new trial in the matter, since they have previously claimed that
Britney had been residing in California for some time, therefore she should
have had a license granted by the aforementioned state.
The jury assigned to the case was not able to break the 10-2 in favor of acquittal deadlock, thus
prompting Van Nuys Superior Court Judge James A. Steele to declare the
mistrial.
Michael Flanagan, Britney Spears’ attorney, deemed the
decision as being only an 80 percent victory, adding that he considered the
trial to have been pointless.
The jury comprised eight women and four men, most of which shared
Flanagan’s opinion that the trial had wasted everybody’s time, as jury foreman Gary
Moy revealed once outside the L.A. courthouse.
