Britney Spears Is Back on MTV

The rumors have been confirmed: pop singer Britney Spears will be the opening act at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards ceremony in Las Vegas, on Sept. 9.

Will she, will she not? Yes, Britney will perform at the musical event, MTV confirmed Thursday.

A statement from the musical channel informs that Britney will perform her new single “Gimme More” in a “long awaited comeback.”

“Celebrating her long awaited comeback to her fans, Spears will be performing LIVE her new song ‘Gimme More’ from her highly anticipated new album due on November 13,” the statement says, emphasizing the live character of her performance.

Perhaps “Cry,” another new song reportedly belonging to Britney, will be a surprise, as MTV has already let the cat out of the bag that Brit-Brit will appear? USA Today reported earlier this week that the pop princess would deliver both tunes at the forthcoming event.

The magazine also shared an interesting piece of information with the rest of the world. One of Britney’s dancers told the magazine that American illusionist Criss Angel would indeed help the pop icon make an unforgettable entrance, complete with… magic.

“She's a very talented young lady and she's going to do an amazing job with the new album,” the magician told People magazine this month.

MTV did not confirm Criss Angel’s participation.

While British singers Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse will both be MIA, due to visa problems and health problems, respectively, the VMAs will not be lacking stars this Sunday.

The event will include performances from Nelly Furtado, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, Fall Out Boy, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Common and Kid Rock, among many more.

VMA executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic promised MTV.com that Britney’s presence at the ceremony would not disappoint her loyal fans.

“You can expect the things we want and expect from Britney, that will all be there,” Ignjatovic said. “What I've seen of it is great. She'll be dancing, performing, doing her thing. That's exactly what we all want. Fans that are familiar with her performance on previous VMAs will not be disappointed.”

Obviously confident, the exec added: “She'll captivate everyone, and set the tone for the rest of the night. There's no one better.”
