Troubles haven’t ended for David Duchovny after he and Tea Leoni wrapped up their divorce. The star from “X-Files” and, more recently – “Californication”, decided to sue the British “Daily Mail”, motivating that the tabloid published an untrue story about him cheating on his former wife with a tennis instructor.
The “Daily Mail” was told that the story they had was false, yet the tabloid decided it would nevertheless post it online. Even the fact that the tennis instructor herself denied the allegations didn’t deter the “Mail” from posting the news. The lawsuit basically said that “by its intentional and reckless conduct, Daily Mail has caused substantial harm to Duchovny, in complete disregard of the truth and of even a semblance of journalistic integrity.”
The story’s headline itself stems malice: “An affair? I'm not going to deny it: Tennis coach tells of her close friendship with 'sex addict' David Duchovny as he splits from wife.’ Edith Pakay, the 28-year-old tennis instructor reiterates that the story is false, and that she and Duchovny have been nothing else more than playing partners and friends. She stated the same thing under oath, too.
It seems that his marriage to Leoni deteriorated due to his sex addiction, which seems to have been treated after Duchovny spent time in a rehab in August, dealing with his problem. He and Tea Leoni also revealed that they had been separated months prior to their divorce. Regarding the lawsuit, David Duchovny is asking for at least $1 million from the British “Daily Mail”.
The outcome of this trial may lead to forming a precedent for other stars suing tabloids that publish fake stories.
