Prime Minister Gordon Brown stated Wednesday that Britain
would improve security at stations, airports and other potential targets to
protect people against any kind of incident from Islamist Militants.
Brown told the parliament that important locations in Britain such as
theaters, restaurants, schools, cinemas and hospitals would have new
instructions that will improve their security.
"While no major failures in our protective security have been
identified, companies that are responsible for crowded places will now be given
detailed and updated advice on how they can improve their resilience against
attack both by better physical protection and greater vigilance in identifying
suspicious behavior," he added.
The airports and 250 of the crowded train terminals will have new blast
barriers. New baggage checks at major rail terminals will be among the new
recommendations. Internet and technology companies will be asked to try
stopping online terrorism propaganda and a meeting will take place for finding
ways to deal with that.
New extra protection against car bombs will be unveiled in
the near future. As already known, the IRA used this tactic in the past and now
Islamic extremist groups adopt it.
The new measures are taken after the discovery of car bombs
in London and an attack on Scotland’s Glasgow Airport
in June, when a fuel-laden jeep hit the entrance of the airport causing a huge
fireball. This was the most dramatic and dangerous accident in Britain since four suicidal bombers killed 52
people and the 4 British attackers on London’s
transport system on July 7, 2005.
"The conclusion today of the review identifies a need to step up
physical protection against possible vehicle bomb attacks. This will include,
where judged necessary, improved security at railway stations and at airport
terminals, ports and over 100 sensitive installations,” Brown said, according
to Reuters.
The new anti-terrorism rules come in addition of the ones already existing
in British airports. Passengers are facing strict baggage checks and form long
lines at security gates in the present days.
Security expert Paul Beaver stressed that fact that there are other threats out
there beyond vehicles alone. "The real concern though is going to be
people with bags on their backs who are bombers,” he said.
"There is no greater priority than the safety and security of our
people and building the strongest possible relationships across all faiths and
communities," Brown said.
Brown has also revealed that Britain will spend more than $830
million for assuring the security of its people. He also proposes sponsoring
events in Pakistan
that are against extremist propaganda.
