Madonna and Guy Ritchie are one step closer to becoming
officially divorced. The two were granted a preliminary decree of divorce on
Friday in the High Court of London.
The “quickie divorce,” which is the first stage of a
two-part divorce that is standard in Britain, has been granted during a brief
court session in which the celebrity affair was concluded, along with 16 other
cases. The preliminary decree cited the British filmmaker’s “unreasonable
behavior,” but did not offer further information.
Neither Madonna nor the director took part in the hearing.
The decree is called a “quickie divorce” because it becomes final in six weeks
and one day, if no disputes occur.
The pop star and Guy Ritchie tied the knot in December 2000
at Skibo Castle in the Scottish Highlands and
announced that they were divorcing last month, following months of rumors with
regard to the separation.
According to reports, Guy Ritchie does not claim a
significant part of the singer’s fortune, which is estimated to be around $445
million. In addition, the Evening Standard and the Times of London reported
that the two had also reached an agreement regarding their only biological
child, 8-year-old Rocco, and their 3-year-old adopted son, David Banda. The
publications said that the two boys would spend time with both of their
parents, while Lourdes, Madonna’s 12-year-old
daughter from a previous relationship with dancer Carlos Leon, will live with
the singer in the United
States.
