Fox News’ top political anchor Brit Hume is said to leave
his nightly newscast after the presidential election. Three of Brit Hume’s
colleagues and friends said that the political anchor wanted to leave the
newscast. Apparently he intends to step down by the end of the year but he still
wants to have a part-time role at Fox.
Brit Hume, 65, intends to continue as a panelist on “Fox
News Sunday” and will work at Fox News Channel only at special events,
according to The Washington Post. He is still negotiating his contract and his
future part with the network. Brit Hume’s departure will mean an important
change for Fox. A network spokeswoman said that Brit Hume wouldn’t discuss details
regarding his departure and his agent Bob Barnett didn’t comment on the issue.
Before coming to Fox, Brit Hume was an ABC News reporter.
His show “Special Report” is broadcast at 6 p.m. every weeknight. The
Washington Post reported that Hume’s role would be similar to that of Tom
Brokaw from NBC, before he began replacing Tim Russert on “Meet the Press.” Hume was brought to Fox by Roger Ailes.
Hume’s decision didn't shock as he told reporters two
years ago that his contract would expire at the end of the year and he
considered leaving.
“I've been doing this a long time, and it's just not as fascinating
to me as it used to be. Look, journalism is a lot about enthusiasm. You have to
have it. I find I am no longer as interested in politics as I was,” said Hume
two years ago to the New York Observer.
His stability contributed to Fox's success, making Fox News one
of the most popular channels on cable since 2002.
