"Bride Wars” is an innocently simple romantic comedy with Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway as best friends forever who turn into best enemies forever because of a wedding day glitch. Since childhood, the two have dreamed of getting married to Mr. Perfect at the Plaza, a reverie that turns into a manufactured nightmare when their respective nuptials are scheduled for the same day in June.
When neither will agree to change her wedding date, their friendship turns to bitter enmity. Both women stoop to inane and unrealistic shenanigans in their vengeance.
We’ve had previous chances to see both actresses doing a better job here and there. And their grooms are even less animated and charming therefore you may fail at actually differentiating them. Daniel (Steve Howey), Liv's intended, is a stable, supportive guy, while Emma's fiancé Fletcher (Chris Pratt) is a couch-potato lout.
The whole idea behind the film is quite trendy these days with the whole hysteria that surrounds weddings. But our protagonists are plain victims of the disease. They are not moral projections of the whole idea; they are its direct targets.
It seems like this movie was made so that the world doesn’t forget the two actresses exist. It’s pointless and charm-less. Gilded with innocuous life lessons and no end of couture window dressing, picture will go down easily enough with viewers who know and want what they're getting into, but is a time-killer for anyone else. I suppose director Gary Winick proved he had much to learn where finesse is concerned; and this film is highly naïve from all points of view.
