Hollywood’s golden couple, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are reportedly in a delicate situation as the biological mother of their adopted daughter, Zahara, said she wants her back.
According to In Touch weekly, a woman claiming to be the biological mother of Ethiopian-born Zahara, Angelina Jolie’s adopted daughter, claims she never signed the adoption papers, which appear to be incorrect since she is still alive.
In Zahara's adoption papers it is clearly stated that the two-year-old has a grandmother and extended family alive in Africa, but no living parents.
"I want my daughter to come home to see where she is from," the woman who says she's Z's mother, Mentewab Dawit Lebiso, was quoted by In Touch as saying. "Her grandmother and I both tried very hard to raise her, and I want her to come home to regain her identity."
"I thought the baby was going to die because there was no food, so I ran away," she said.
Mentewab’s mother then signed the baby over for adoption insisting that another man then told the adoption agency that the mum was dead.
"What he has done is equal to murder," Mentewab insisted.
"He took my daughter away and he just disappeared with her. He said I was dead, but I heard from my mother that she never said that."
Zahara’s aunt has also spoken out about the adoption saying: "My mother was very sad. At one point she was even thinking of trying to find a way to bring her grandchild back, but she has no money, so she can't."
"After they took the baby, they didn’t keep in contact. They didn’t tell us anything about her," Zahara’s aunt added.
Angelina adopted Zahara, who was malnourished and had to receive medical attention, almost two years ago, "She's from Ethiopia. She's an AIDS orphan," she said.
The 32-year-old actress and her partner Brad Pitt have three adopted children, Cambodian-born Maddox, Zahara, Pax from Vietnam and a biological daughter, Shiloh.
Given the challenging situation, the couple will reportedly fight for their daughter
"She believes that Zahara is an orphan and the woman who claims to be her mom is mistaken," a source said, "Zahara was days away from death and Angelina saved that child. As far as she is concerned, that bonded her to that little girl forever."
However, according to adoption specialist Jerri Jenista, if the woman reclaiming Zahara is indeed her birth mother, then she does have a case since she never signed papers relinquishing rights to her daughter.
"If some family member comes in and leaves the child at an orphanage and signs her over, then the mother wants her back, you can make the argument that the person didn’t truly understand that their child was gone forever," Jenista was quoted by transworldnews.com as saying.
